Frequently Asked Questions
A list based email rare bird alert system .
A discussion group via email. Participants in these discussion groups place themselves on mailing lists in order to be able to send messages to and receive messages from other members on the list. Mich-listers is the name of this list. This list is managed by Jim Lesser who is called the "list manager."
Rare species in Michigan, Accidental or Casual on the Michigan Birds Records Committee Checklist, or potential first state records not on that list. These species should be ones that a year state lister would want to chase because they would otherwise be very hard to find. These reports are geared to the intermediate and advanced birder. This is the primary criteria to decide if the report is permissible. Other secondary criteria follow below. County rarities. Early or late species. The BODY of the note must include the date the species was seen, in which county, and a major city nearby. You should give directions. The SUBJECT line should give the species or hot spot, the county and date. This will help others decide if they wish to open or delete the message. Sign your name to the bottom of your message.
Ones with Inflammatory, rude or obscene content.
No. Attachments are how viruses are inadvertently spread to our subscribers' computers. If you receive an attachment from this list, please delete the message and its attachment without reading it.
Definitely not. Limited discussions about identification difficulties with a particular reported species are permissible. However, the purpose of mich-listers is to report rarities, and describe where they are located. Use mich-chat for chatting.
Messages can only be sent from already subscribed email addresses. New subscribers should "lurk" for at least 3 months before sending reports.
Only the list owner has access to the list membership. Precautions have been taken to keep list members' email addresses private. This will help prevent mass mailing of advertisements (called "spamming") to list members.
During migration months list subscribers can expect 5 to 15 messages per day. During non-migration months, one could expect 1 to 10 messages each week.
The rarity reports are not screened nor verified, in order to speed up getting them to you. If you know the message sender, this will help you decide if the report is legitimate.
